Big names are circulating around Bayern Munich in their search for a backup goalkeeper for Neuer

In the search for a backup for Manuel Neuer, the name of David de Gea has also emerged. Bayern Munich is said to have inquired about the 32-year-old Spanish goalkeeper. The former Manchester United goalkeeper is now the latest shot-stopper linked to the German champions.

In recent weeks, the names of several goalkeepers have been circulating at Säbener Strasse, as it's now clear that Neuer will likely need more time to recover from his skiing accident, and Yann Sommer is not interested in playing second fiddle once the 37-year-old captain is fit again. The question remains whether the same applies to De Gea, but nonetheless, his agent has been approached to gauge the interest of the free-agent Spaniard in a move to Munich, as reported by Bild.

On Tuesday, La Repubblica also linked Wojciech Szczesny to a transfer to Bayern. Juventus is reportedly open to selling the Polish goalkeeper, but it is also doubtful whether a role in Neuer's shadow would be a serious option for him. According to Sky Deutschland, David Raya is still the main candidate to fill the goalkeeper position at Bayern. The Spanish goalkeeper is expected to join on loan from Mark Flekken's Brentford.

The goalkeeping situation continues to be a topic of discussion at Bayern. Last winter, there was already plenty of speculation about which goalkeeper would fill in for the long-term absence of Neuer, who broke his leg during a ski vacation. Ultimately, Sommer was brought in from Borussia Mönchengladbach. The 34-year-old Swiss goalkeeper signed a two-and-a-half-year deal but is now on his way out. Internazionale appears to be his destination, but we are still waiting for the green light.

On Tuesday, Bayern already finalized the loan deal of Alexander Nübel to VfB Stuttgart. The now 26-year-old former Schalke 04 goalkeeper was once brought in as Neuer's designated successor but spent last season on loan at AS Monaco by his own request due to a lack of playing time. With only Sven Ulreich (34) and Johannes Schenk (20) left in the squad, the arrival of an additional goalkeeper is much needed. Bayern's search for a solution continues.
