The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) announced on Saturday that Gianluigi Buffon will return to the Italian national team. Buffon, who recently confirmed his retirement as a goalkeeper after 28 years, will take on the role of the new team manager for the Azzurri. This position was previously held by Gianluca Vialli, but the former striker of Sampdoria, Juventus, and Chelsea passed away earlier this year.

President Gabriele Gravina approached Buffon in the past few days, and the 45-year-old legend has accepted the offer. In September, the former goalkeeper of Juventus, Parma, and Paris Saint-Germain will join the national team for the first time. Buffon was last part of the team in 2018, where he earned 176 caps for Italy.

At that time, Buffon played his last match for Italy in a friendly match against Argentina. He continued playing at the club level for five more years until he announced his retirement this week. Apparently, Buffon has no plans for a sabbatical, as evidenced by his new role with the national team.

Gigi is and will always be a passionate football lover, as evident from his reaction to the news on Twitter. 'I am returning to the national team because the boy who walked through the gates of the Coverciano training complex thirty years ago still has dreams and wishes to share them with the Italian fans.'
