In recent weeks, De Ligt languished on the bench of Der Rekordmeister. The defender didn't even make an appearance in the midweek Champions League clash with Manchester United (4-3 victory). However, in the home game against VfL Bochum, he was brought back into action.

After an impressive first half, everything seemed to be going well for De Ligt, especially since the former Ajax player had also scored brilliantly from a corner kick. However, he was conspicuously absent in the second half.

De Ligt should have been substituted during halftime. Coach Thomas Tuchel explained after the match why, and it turned out to be a serious matter. De Ligt's knee had taken a blow that proved too much to handle, preventing him from continuing.

Doubts about the Netherlands

Furthermore, the defender had to rush to the hospital for an MRI scan to determine the extent of the injury. This is a setback, especially considering the upcoming European Championship qualification matches for the Netherlands. De Ligt had secured a spot in the starting lineup during the national team's recent victory. On October 13, the Netherlands will play a home game against France in their quest for a spot in the European Championship, followed by an away match against Greece three days later.
