In the Esprit Arena, Fortuna Düsseldorf, with Dutch players Jordy de Wijs and Vincent Vermeij in the starting lineup, defended a comfortable 3-0 lead from the first leg in Bochum.

The team appeared confident and in control, looking to secure their place in the Bundesliga. However, the match took an unexpected turn when Philipp Hofmann scored after eighteen minutes, bringing the tension back into the game and giving Bochum a glimmer of hope (see goals below).

Bochum's determination only grew as the game progressed. In the 66th minute, Hofmann once again found the back of the net, heading in from close range to make it 0-2. This goal further shifted the momentum in Bochum's favor. Shortly afterward, a handball by a Düsseldorf player in the penalty area resulted in a crucial penalty kick for Bochum. Kevin Stöger stepped up and successfully converted the penalty, bringing the aggregate score to an even 3-3. The dramatic comeback was now within reach.

Despite significant chances for both teams, neither could break the deadlock in regulation time, and the match went into extra time. The atmosphere in the stadium was electric, with fans on the edge of their seats. Two and a half minutes before the final whistle of the second extra time, Düsseldorf came agonizingly close to scoring the decisive goal. However, Bochum's defense held firm, narrowly avoiding conceding twice in a matter of seconds.

With the score still level after extra time, the match went to a penalty shootout. The tension was palpable as players from both sides prepared for the all-important spot-kicks. Former Vitesse players Matus Bero and Maximilian Wittek both scored for their respective teams, maintaining the pressure on each subsequent kicker.

The turning point came when Takashi Uchino, tasked with taking Düsseldorf's final penalty, missed his shot, sending the ball over the bar. This miss proved to be decisive, as Bochum ultimately prevailed in the shootout. The traveling Bochum fans erupted in joy, celebrating their team's miraculous comeback and securing their place in the Bundesliga for another season.

The outcome was particularly harsh for Düsseldorf, who had finished third in the 2. Bundesliga the previous season and were hopeful of promotion. The dramatic nature of the match, combined with the high stakes, made for an unforgettable encounter that will be remembered by both sets of supporters for years to come.

For Bochum, this victory was a testament to their resilience and fighting spirit. Despite being written off after a heavy first-leg defeat, they managed to turn the tie around and achieve an improbable survival in the top tier of German football. The players, coaching staff, and fans will undoubtedly savor this moment as they look forward to another season in the Bundesliga.
