On Monday, there were already rumors that the Bundesliga leader had opened up Frimpong's contract, and both parties have now confirmed that. In a short video, Frimpong addressed the fans. 'Hello fans, I am very happy that I can stay here.'

'Frimpong has developed into an extremely popular figure within our club over the past years,' responded Bayer Leverkusen's sporting director Simon Rolfes via the club channels. 'At the moment, he is one of the best players in the Bundesliga in his position. His contract extension underlines how important he is to us.'

Two and a half years ago, Frimpong transferred from Celtic for eleven million euros. 'A lot has happened since then,' says Frimpong. 'We have accomplished beautiful things and have constantly improved our team. It is very nice that I can be a part of this team.'

Although Frimpong shines weekly at Bayer Leverkusen, the defender is still waiting for his debut with the Dutch national team. That could happen in the coming international period. The defender has been included in the preliminary selection by Ronald Koeman.
