Frustrated Bergwijn explains encounter with unhappy Ajax fans

Steven Bergwijn sees few points of reference at Ajax after the loss away to FC Utrecht (4-3). The body language of the captain of the Amsterdam side spoke volumes after the match.

Bergwijn couldn't prevent Ajax from staying winless in official matches for the eighth consecutive time, not counting the abandoned away game against RKC Waalwijk (leading 3-2). The Dutch international struggled to find the words to describe his feelings after the fourth consecutive Eredivisie defeat. 'We're here again with a crappy feeling, lost again. I can't really put my feelings into words.'

The fact that Ajax had the first victory since August 24 within reach after two goals from Krystian Hlynsson and a successful penalty from Bergwijn makes the loss even more frustrating for him. 'When you score three times and come back from a 2-0 deficit to 2-3 with twenty minutes to go, you shouldn't lose it anymore. The way we conceded those goals is too easy. We should have closed the game and not do anything foolish.'

Bergwijn's demeanor in front of the camera said it all. The 26-year-old forward sees few positives for Ajax to hold onto at the moment, with away matches against Brighton & Hove Albion and PSV on the horizon. The only thing he could say is that he and his teammates are giving their all. 'Of course, it's not good enough; otherwise, we wouldn't be where we are now. I don't even know how many consecutive losses we've had. It's tough.'

Fans

Due to the unprecedented sporting crisis at Ajax, Bergwijn felt obligated to approach the section of traveling fans after the match. 'I felt that I had to go there; we owe it to the fans. They support us in every match,' explained the former PSV and Tottenham Hotspur forward regarding the interaction. 'They didn't say anything bad; I tried to convey to them that we are doing our utmost, and we don't want to be in this position either.'
