Lukaku seemed to become the scapegoat of the evening earlier. The Belgian is considered a specialist when it comes to penalties and had never missed from the spot in Italy before. Mourinho might have already counted his chickens when the striker was given the opportunity to take a penalty in the fifth minute after a handball by Federico Baschirotto. However, Lukaku's effort was saved by Lecce goalkeeper Wladimiro Falcone.
This ended Lukaku's perfect penalty record in Serie A. In his time at Inter Milan, he had converted all of his previous fourteen penalties in the Italian league into goals, but this time it went wrong.
The miss had unpleasant consequences because Lecce took the lead in the second half. Pontus Almqvist was in the right place to score the 0-1. Roma (with Rick Karsdorp as a starter) tried everything to at least secure a point but seemed to be sinking at home. At the end of regular time, it was still 0-1.
However, everything turned around for Roma. First, Serdar Azmoun headed in the equalizer, and then Lukaku scored the winning goal in the 94th minute. The forward used his strong body to fend off his marker and scored from close range: 2-1. As a result of the victory, Roma is now eighth in Serie A.
