Mainz sends El Ghazi packing after all

Anwar El Ghazi and FSV Mainz 05 have parted ways with immediate effect. The Bundesliga club dismissed him on Friday evening due to his social media posts regarding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Additionally, a few days after the forward appeared to be reinstated, the German Public Prosecutor's Office has initiated an investigation against the player.

On Friday evening, Mainz suddenly announced that they would part ways with El Ghazi. The club explicitly stated that they had terminated their cooperation with him immediately. ZDF had earlier reported that El Ghazi and Mainz were informed about an investigation into the former Dutch national team international.

The former Ajax and PSV player is suspected of "disturbing public peace and approving of crimes in combination with incitement to hatred," as reported by the German media.

Technical director Christian Heidel had not commented on the investigation at the time. "I won't explain anything anymore. I won't provide any more statements," he told ZDF. On Monday, Mainz had announced that El Ghazi had expressed remorse for his statements, which the player himself contradicted.

El Ghazi seemed to be on the verge of returning to Mainz in the short term, but on Friday, Heidel confirmed that the Dutchman had been on sick leave from the club since Monday. It has now been decided to part ways.
