Manchester City reportedly pays ninety million euros plus bonuses for Gvardiol, surpassing Harry Maguire as the most expensive defender of all time. Maguire moved from Leicester City to Manchester United four years ago for approximately 88 million euros.
Gvardiol played for RB Leipzig in the past two years, having been acquired for just under twenty million euros from Dinamo Zagreb. The Croatian defender quickly caught the attention of top European clubs. RB Leipzig managed to retain him last year, but now he is leaving. With his release clause, he becomes RB Leipzig's most expensive player ever sold.
Interestingly, the first signing Manchester City made this summer was also a Croatian: midfielder Mateo Kovacic, who came from Chelsea.
