Newcastle United opens their wallet once again: 44 million for a one-time English international

Newcastle United has unveiled its second major summer signing after Sandro Tonali. The club, led by Sven Botman, strengthens its squad with the acquisition of Harvey Barnes for a hefty sum of 44 million euros, who joins from the relegated Leicester City.

The club announced this on Sunday afternoon. Barnes came through the youth academy of Leicester. After being loaned out to clubs like Barnsley and West Bromwich Albion, he emerged as a key player on the left side starting from the 2019-20 season. Ultimately, he played 146 league matches for the surprising 2016 champions. During this time, he scored 35 goals and provided 25 assists to his teammates.

In October 2020, Barnes made his only appearance for England as a substitute against Wales. Fifteen minutes before the end of the match, manager Gareth Southgate granted the left-footer his debut, replacing Jack Grealish. Since then, Barnes has been waiting for his second international cap. Despite having a decent individual season, scoring thirteen league goals, his efforts couldn't prevent Leicester from being relegated to the second tier.

With Barnes' arrival, Newcastle is preparing for the imminent departure of Allan Saint-Maximin. The Frenchman is set to move to Saudi Arabia, as was made clear earlier this week.
