Scotland, having defeated Cyprus on Sunday evening, is unbeatable in Group A of the European Championship qualification series. In a group consisting of Spain, Norway, Georgia, and Cyprus, Scotland has accumulated fifteen points from five games. In the remaining three matches, the team under coach Steve Clarke only needs one more point to qualify directly for the European Championship in Germany.
On the path to the tournament, the Scottish Football Association hopes to persuade Englishman Harvey Barnes to strengthen the national team, as reported by The Times. The 25-year-old forward from Newcastle United was born in England and has already played for The Three Lions. However, due to his Scottish grandparents and the recent relaxation of rules regarding national team switches, a switch is still possible.
Barnes, who moved from Leicester City to Newcastle for approximately €44 million this summer, is reportedly open to the idea of switching. Earlier in his career, the winger did not respond to advances from Scotland. Coach Clarke already has two players, goalkeeper Angus Gunn and Elliot Anderson (both Newcastle players like Barnes), who have previously represented England at youth levels. Scotland will play a friendly match against England in Glasgow on Tuesday.
