Spalletti speaks of a 'traumatic experience' in the Italian squad

Luciano Spalletti believes that the exclusion of Sandro Tonali and Nicolò Zaniolo has had a significant impact on the Italian squad. The duo was removed from the Italian camp by the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) because they are under investigation regarding their gambling behavior.

Last week, Italy was shaken by a major gambling scandal. Among others, Zaniolo and Tonali are suspected of illegal gambling practices. This cost the duo their place in the Italian squad. 'The players were absolutely distraught, as the national team players are very close to each other,' Spalletti said in a press conference ahead of the Euro qualifier against England.

'It was a traumatic experience for the team because the authorities had almost stormed into the locker room. Everyone was taken aback and shocked. We then spent almost the entire day saying goodbye to them and giving them a hug before they went home.'

Spalletti hopes that the investigation proves their innocence and that they can quickly focus on football again. 'Gambling is a form of temptation. It's something bad, but these things happen. We will talk to the players. We are monitoring the situation and also offering help where needed. Hopefully, they can get back on the pitch soon.'

That's why Italy's head coach demands something extra in the match against England on Tuesday. 'England is a top-class team and has one of the best teams in the world. That's why we need to be twice as good when it comes to staying united as a team.'
