Maguire lost his place in the United lineup last season, and Ten Hag recently took away his captaincy. West Ham United has successfully made a bid for Maguire. According to Ten Hag, the decision is now up to the player himself.

"He has the qualities to be a world-class center-back," the United manager is quoted by the BBC. "He's the best defender in the English team, so why couldn't he be that for us? But he needs to show it. If he doesn't have the confidence to fight his way back into the team, then he should leave. But I'm happy with him."

United plays its first Premier League match of the season on Monday evening, at home against Wolverhampton Wanderers. Ten Hag doesn't rule out the possibility that Maguire could still be included in the match squad for this game.

Raphaël Varane and Lisandro Martínez are Ten Hag's primary options in the center of the Manchester United defense. Victor Lindelöf and Maguire are behind them, and left-back Luke Shaw has also occasionally played in the center. Additionally, Jonny Evans is still training with United, and he could be a replacement for Maguire.
