Mason Greenwood's move to Marseille this summer has quickly turned heads, as the young winger has made an immediate impact in Ligue 1.

Transferred from Manchester United for 36 million euros, Greenwood has taken the French league by storm, scoring five goals in just his first three matches. This impressive start has reignited discussions about his potential and future, both at the club and international levels.

Greenwood's early success at Marseille comes after a turbulent period in his career. At Manchester United, his promising trajectory was abruptly halted due to serious off-field allegations. Greenwood faced accusations of physical and sexual assault against a girlfriend, which led to his exclusion from the squad and eventual exit from the club. Although these charges were later withdrawn, the episode left a significant mark on his career, and he has not been called up to the England national team since earning his sole cap in 2020.

Given these circumstances, there has been speculation about Greenwood's international future. Some rumors suggest that he might opt to represent Jamaica, a possibility made more intriguing by the presence of Steve McLaren, the former England manager, as Jamaica's coach. McLaren, who is familiar with Greenwood from his time as an assistant coach at Manchester United, could potentially offer Greenwood a fresh start on the international stage.

However, there are those who believe Greenwood's story with England might not be over just yet. Former England international Chris Waddle, who has experience playing for Marseille, expressed optimism about Greenwood's chances of returning to the England squad. Speaking to Flashscore, Waddle suggested that if Greenwood continues his remarkable form at Marseille, he could be considered by the next England manager, whether it is Lee Carsley, the current interim manager, or another successor to Gareth Southgate.

Waddle's comments underline Greenwood's talent and the potential he still possesses despite the setbacks. "Greenwood? He’s a very good player. He wears the number 10 and England seems to be producing several quality number 10s recently. He gets out of tight spaces very quickly and started scoring goals right away. The new England manager should be aware of this," Waddle remarked. He emphasized Greenwood's ability to navigate tight spaces and his natural goal-scoring instincts, qualities that have been on full display at Marseille.

While praising Greenwood, Waddle also provided a measured perspective on the level of competition in Ligue 1. He acknowledged that while the French league is strong, it may not be as competitive as some of the other top European leagues like the Premier League, La Liga, or the Bundesliga. "We all know that the French league is quite strong, but it’s not as strong as the other three or four European leagues at the moment, and we have to keep that in mind. It’s not as strong as the Premier League, La Liga, or the Bundesliga. But all he can do is what he’s doing at Marseille, scoring goals and playing well," Waddle added.

This viewpoint suggests that while Greenwood's current form is impressive, the real test of his abilities will come if he can replicate this success against tougher competition. Nonetheless, his performances for Marseille have certainly put him back in the spotlight and could pave the way for a return to the England setup if he continues to excel. For now, Greenwood remains focused on his career at Marseille, but the prospect of international football, whether with England or Jamaica, remains a tantalizing possibility on the horizon.
