It is certainly not the first time that Hamann has expressed criticism about something or someone related to his old club. Liverpool coach Jürgen Klopp has previously responded to his fellow countryman's remarks. "Who said that? Didi Hamann? Oh, fantastic. A great source, widely respected," Klopp said sarcastically. "Being a former Liverpool player doesn't give you the right to say whatever you want."
Despite Klopp's retort, Hamann remains undeterred by the criticism. In his column, he has once again given his candid opinion about Thiago. "When things are going well and he has a lot of possession, he's a good player, but when it's necessary to put things in place and take control, he falls short. I don't understand the hype around him. He's a decent player, but not a great one."
Partly due to injuries, Thiago only played in eighteen Premier League matches last season, of which he started in fourteen. Since his move from Bayern Munich in mid-2020, he has been a disappointment to Hamann. "He is the most overrated player in European football. He would be better off going to Spain, to a team that has a lot of possession."
