In his first weeks at RB Leipzig, Xavi Simons has become an outright Bundesliga sensation. Technical director Max Eberl is hopeful that he can convince the Dutch international to stay longer.

After his return from PSV to Paris Saint-Germain, Simons was loaned out to Leipzig and has hit the ground running in the German league with three goals and four assists. Coach Marco Rose already expressed last week that he would like to retain the twenty-year-old forward for a longer period, but the question is what the possibilities are. However, Eberl is optimistic.

'I think he is building an emotional bond with RB Leipzig,' says the technical director of Leipzig in an interview with Kicker. 'He identifies with us, with the team, and with the club. We are trying to ensure that he stays with us longer than the summer of 2024.' At that time, his loan agreement with PSG will expire.

Eberl was also the man who convinced Simons to come to Leipzig last summer. The former player of Borussia Mönchengladbach sees that the former PSV player fits well with the Red Bull style. 'He is very active and willing, has a lot of stamina and game intelligence. With his overall package, he fits very well at RB Leipzig,' says the fifty-year-old director.

Mwene

Phillipp Mwene, who played with Simons at PSV last year, also sees that his former teammate is doing well in the Bundesliga. 'Xavi is a great footballer who, despite his role as a forward, is not too proud to sprint back and engage in a duel,' says the Austrian back, who is playing for FSV Mainz 05 this season.

It's clear that Simons has had little trouble adjusting from being the (joint) top scorer of the Eredivisie to the higher level in the Bundesliga. On Saturday, the former youth player of Barcelona assisted Timo Werner in scoring his first Bundesliga goal since April 15th, although he was not officially credited with the assist. With that goal, Leipzig won for the fifth consecutive time.
