Forward Thomas Muller announced on Monday his farewell to the German national team, after earning 131 caps over 14 years, during which he played in four World Cups and four European Championships.
"After 131 international matches and 45 goals, I say goodbye to the federal eagle, of the German tricolor flag," Thomas Muller stated in a video posted on his official page.
The 34-year-old footballer bid farewell to the national team after the conclusion of Euro 2024, a tournament hosted by Germany, who were eliminated in the quarterfinals by Spain (2-1 after extra time), who went on to win the title on Sunday. Müller's last match for the 'Mannschaft' was precisely against Spain, with the forward coming on in the 80th minute.
With Germany, Thomas Müller became a World Cup champion in 2014, in the edition held in Brazil, where the Germans defeated Argentina in the final with a goal by Mario Götze in extra time, at the 113th minute. Müller's contributions were instrumental throughout the tournament, showcasing his skill and leadership on the world stage.
Reflecting on his international career, Müller said, "We celebrated together, and sometimes we also cried together. I want to thank all the fans and members of the national team. Thank you for your support over all these years." His heartfelt message highlighted the emotional journey and bond he shared with supporters and teammates alike.
The forward, who still has one more year on his contract with Bayern Munich, bids farewell as the third player with the most appearances for the German team and as the sixth-highest goal scorer. Throughout his career, Müller has been known for his versatility, work ethic, and knack for scoring crucial goals, making him one of the most respected and beloved figures in German football.
As Müller transitions out of his international role, his legacy remains firmly intact, having left an indelible mark on German football history. His departure marks the end of an era for the national team, which will look to build on the foundations laid by veterans like Müller in pursuit of future successes.
