Manchester United announced this Sunday the signing of Joshua Zirkzee, a Dutch forward who leaves Bologna after two seasons, having helped the Italian club qualify for the next Champions League.
The 23-year-old Dutch international played in two matches at Euro 2024. He has signed a contract valid until 2029, with an option for an additional year at Old Trafford, where he will be coached by his compatriot Erik ten Hag.
According to the English press, Zirkzee will cost the Red Devils 42.5 million euros, making the leap to the Premier League after an impressive season in Serie A, with 12 goals and six assists in 37 games for Bologna, which finished the championship in fifth place.
“After having discussions with the coach and the club leaders, I know how exciting the future will be here, and I can’t wait to be part of the success at Manchester United. I am a player who has always dedicated everything to winning, and I am ready for this challenge to take my career to another level and win more trophies. It is a privilege to join such an iconic club, and now I need to take a break after being with the national team, but I will return ready to make an immediate impact,” the player told United's media.
Trained at Bayern, Zirkzee also played for Parma and Anderlecht before joining Bologna in 2022. His development at Bayern laid a strong foundation for his professional career, and his subsequent stints at Parma and Anderlecht provided him with valuable experience in different European leagues. At Bologna, Zirkzee became a key player, showcasing his talent and contributing significantly to the team’s success.
Now, he strengthens an English giant that finished the last Premier League season in eighth place, qualifying for the Europa League group stage by winning the FA Cup. United fans have high hopes for Zirkzee, expecting him to add firepower to the team's attack and help improve their league standings. His arrival is seen as part of Erik ten Hag’s strategy to rebuild and strengthen the squad for both domestic and European competitions.
As Zirkzee prepares to join Manchester United, he brings with him a wealth of experience from his time in Germany, Italy, Belgium, and on the international stage. His versatility and goal-scoring ability are expected to be valuable assets for the Red Devils as they aim for a successful season ahead.
